Working class history
We have here a badge commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders (UCS) 'work-in'. The Tory government under Ed Health decided to let the yard's wither on the vine and die, the workers had other ideas - 6,000 jobs where on the line. They fought and they won!
‘We are not going to strike...We are taking over the yards because we refuse to accept that faceless men can make these decisions. We are not strikers. We are responsible people and we will conduct ourselves with dignity and discipline' - Jimmy Reid, chair of the joint co-ordinating committee for UCS, June 1971.
This enamel badge with brooch fixing celebrates this famous victory, only 200 have been manufactured when they are gone, they are gone.
